THE PICKWICK PHARMACY PRESERVES A PIECE OF HISTORY
AND OPENS SODA FOUNTAIN DOORS ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 25.
The Pickwick hosts a community-wide Open House to unveil the 1949 soda fountain.
August 14, 2007 (Greenville, SC) – The Pickwick announced today that it has completed its soda shop construction and renovation and plans to unveil the 1949 soda fountain to the community during an Open House on Saturday, August 25. The 60-years old business was recently purchased by two brothers, Chad and Kelly Odom, from their father and pharmacist, Dwight Odom. With their father, the two brothers have incorporated a soda fountain into the pharmacy and will be the third generation of Odoms to manage the local business that was founded in 1947 by their grandfather and great uncle.
The Open House on Saturday, August 25 will include numerous activities. The day will start with a display of classic cars, followed by a straw-cutting ceremony to officially open the doors of the soda fountain. Special guests scheduled to participate in the ceremony include Mayor Knox White; Rev. Robert Earle Dennis, who was once a soda jerk at the original Pickwick soda fountain; and past Lieutenant Governor Nick Theodore who still visits The Pickwick every Saturday morning. And, after a search to find the oldest participating male and female residents of Greenville County, The Pickwick has identified Ms. Margaret C. Williams and Mr. JD Todd Jr. to receive the first honorary banana splits. Ms. Williams is a Columbia native and has lived in Greenville for more than 60 years, and Mr. Todd is 95 years old.
Reminiscing about the 1950s, Mr. Jimmy Thomas, a long-time resident of Greenville, commented, "I grew up on Augusta Rd. and went to Greenville High. After school, it was a big tradition for everyone to go to the local soda fountain and eat toasted Duke sandwiches and drink orangeade. I am proud of the Odoms for bringing back this great tradition and for keeping the business in the family. Folks just prefer to deal with a family-owned, local business."
The community is invited to attend the Open House, take a walk down memory lane, and celebrate the unveiling of the soda fountain. The Open House will take place rain or shine at The Pickwick, 3219 Augusta Street, Greenville. They are located just half a mile off I-85 and are at the intersection of Augusta Rd and Mauldin Rd., across from the Goodwill store. The agenda for The Pickwick Open House is as follows:
- 10:00 am – Display of classic cars from the 50s and 60s
- 11:00 am – Straw-cutting ceremony and unveiling of the soda fountain
- 11:30-2:30 pm – Lunch is served (Duke sandwiches, hot dogs, cherry cokes, shakes, and orangeade)
- 3:00 pm – Honorary first banana split served to oldest participating resident of Greenville, Ms. Margaret C. Williams
- 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm – 50 cents ice cream cones – bring the family!
Three generations of Odoms will be on hand at the event and will showcase the soda fountain, taking visitors around the store and reminiscing of times past. The occasion will also be in memory of the brothers’ grandfather, grandmother, great uncle, and uncle – four people who were instrumental in their lives and in the success of The Pickwick.
Local architect firm Pazdan-Smith Group designed the architectural renderings, and construction was completed by Thomas Lewis at TL Lewis Construction. Mr. Lewis is a long-time friend of the Odoms and worked at The Pickwick delivering prescriptions when he was in high school. The soda shop seats 52 people in counter and bar seating.
The Pickwick has a long history with the Greenville community and is one of the few locally-owned, non-chain pharmacies that remain in SC. The third-generation family-owned pharmacy has been serving the local community since before World War II. For more information, contact The Pickwick at 864.277.4180.
