THE PICKWICK PHARMACY SEARCHES FOR OLDEST GREENVILLE COUNTY RESIDENT TO RECEIVE THE SODA FOUNTAIN’S HONORARY FIRST BANANA SPLIT.
The Pickwick seeks applicants.
July 19, 2007 (Greenville, SC) – The Pickwick Pharmacy announced today that it is searching for the oldest resident in Greenville County to receive the first honorary banana split from its new soda fountain. The soda fountain at The Pickwick is scheduled to open in August 2007 and will be unveiled during an open house for the community at that time. During the open house, cars from the 50s and 60s will be on display, there will be a straw-cutting ceremony, and 50 cents ice cream cones will be served in the afternoon.
Members of the community that are over 80 years old, feel they may qualify as the oldest living resident in Greenville County, and are interested in participating in The Pickwick open house festivities are eligible to apply. To apply, submit a 3” x 5” index card, postmarked before August 5, with the following information:
- Resident's full name
- Residential address (street, city, state, zip)
- Resident's phone number
- Resident's birthday
Index cards with the above information should be mailed to Peacock Marketing Group, PO Box 8075, Greenville, SC 29604. After reviewing the applications, the eldest applicant will be contacted to verify interest and confirm residency and age. Other applicants will not be notified. There is no cost to apply or participate.
Dwight Odom, whose father and uncle founded The Pickwick more than 60 years ago and remains as the lead pharmacist, said, "My sons and I wanted to preserve a piece of Greenville’s history by bringing back the soda fountain to The Pickwick. What better way to celebrate this occasion than to engage a local resident who likely has very vivid memories of soda fountains from the 1950s."
When the soda fountain opens in August, it will seat approximately 50 people and the menu will be typical of the lunch menu from the 1940s – simple sandwiches heated on a griddle, shakes and malts, root beer floats, fresh-squeezed orangeade and lemonade, hotdogs and chilidogs, 30 flavors of ice cream, and cherry and vanilla cokes served from a 1949 soda fountain.
The Pickwick has a long history with the Greenville community and is one of the few locally-owned, non-chain pharmacies that remain in SC. The third-generation family-owned pharmacy has been serving the local community since before World War II and remains open during construction.
